Soongsil University held the nominated design contest for Hyungnam Engineering Building that would create an iconic landmark to show off a new prestige of the university towards the 21th century. This building is a work designed by Sohn Hak-Sik, a United States' architect, who won the prize in the contest. The university tried to make an open space by forming a community including the campus and the surrounding environment, to improve land utilization in consideration of a small space of the campus, and to maximize an open space. Besides, based on the pedestrian walkway from a new main gate for a future pedestrian-only entry route to the dormitory at the eastern end, pockets parks, an open space around a newly constructed Hyungnam Engineering Building, a central park and a main stadium are linked for easy access. The free whole building shape and internal spatial composition of this building will make the paragon of cradles to foster the leaders of the 21th century, and the building will also be a structure to lead the change in campus buildings.
